Fans of the franchise will definitely want to make sure to check out ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ if you haven’t yet had the chance, the majority of which should likely be quite pleased. Overall, ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ largely succeeds at wrapping up the story and while it isn’t nearly as impressive as the first or third installments, it’s a notable improvement over the largely disappointing ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ and provides some real closure, answering a number of questions fans have surely been anticipating for some time, not to mention delivering plenty of the creepy and jump-worthy moments most fans expect and love. The third version of the film included on the release is the Unrated with Alternate Ending Version which seems to be identical to the standard Unrated version with one key difference, the inclusion of a drastically different ending which provides less closure, likely shot as a safety measure in the chance they had opted last minute not to wrap the series with ‘The Ghost Dimension’ serving as the final chapter. The Unrated (or Extended) Version of the film runs approximately 97 minutes in length compared with the Theatrical Version’s 87 minute runtime, therefore providing around ten minutes of additional footage reintegrated into the film, at least a chunk of which includes some wonderfully creepy and indelible moments that fans of the franchise are certain to appreciate. While, the Blu-ray 3D disc only includes the Theatrical Version of the film, fans can rest assured that the 2D disc also included in the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack includes the two new cuts of the film, as well as the Theatrical Version in 2D so they won’t be sacrificing the Unrated Extended Versions by choosing to purchase the release in 3D. Hopefully that should provide some clarification for folks on the continued debate and comments I’ve seen regarding the matter. As opposed to illogically shooting a found footage film utilizing numerous placed cameras (as we know is always the case with the franchise), ‘The Ghost Dimension’ is only actually presented in 3D when seen from the view of the old camera which is able to capture the activity, everything from the point of view of the other cameras is presented in 2D, which I found to be a surprisingly brilliant move. While I was admittedly just as hesitant as most regarding the use of 3D for a found footage film, the clever method in which it was implemented has certainly altered my opinion on the matter, and also serves as the explanation to why some folks repeatedly mention the apparent lack of 3D effect present. One factor I want to address is the constant debate and critiquing regarding the use of 3D this time around, as well as the comments I have continually seen floating around mentioning the supposed lack of 3D altogether. While it may not uncover and decipher the entirety of questions many fans may have or serve as an overly remarkable final installment, let alone come to close to the best film in the series, ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ is certainly a significant improvement over ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ and delivers for the most part, mostly succeeding in wrapping up the story in a satisfactory manner. Some folks may be disappointed by the lack of an appearance by the adult Katie, although fortunately the story doesn’t notably lack as a result of her absence. It also provides a more than sufficient collection of jump scares and terrifying moments, sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seat for at least a large chunk of the runtime. ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ serves as a solid wrap to the popular franchise and while it may not cover every element introduced throughout the series, it supplies numerous answers to an adequate number of the questions viewers have been wondering about for years. Now they must figure out what they are dealing with and attempt to eradicate it before something terrible happens to their daughter. When their daughter begins talking to a strange entity that only the ancient camera seems able to capture, the old video cassettes begin to piece together the disturbing possibility that their moving into the home was no mere coincidence. While unpacking they discover an old box containing VHS tapes and a large and unrecognizable video camera which the father soon discovers seems to have unique abilities, such as being able to pick up strange occurrences not visible with the naked eye. The latest and intended final chapter in the widely popular recent horror franchise, ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ follows a new family who unbeknownst to them has just moved into the childhood home of Katie and Kristi. Using a special camera that can see spirits, a family must protect their daughter from an evil entity with a sinister plan. As the Boxee Box is basically a modified version of XBMC, it has a lot of useful features behind the software not enabled in the frontend of the software.ĭisclaimer: This is a outside modification to the device and there is no warranty if the device fails. Fortunately, you can root the device and get some features you had and some you never had. Although the company said that they are trying to “ensure there’s minimal impact to your devices”, it is unknown which services will just drop. This article appears in the October/November 2013 issue of Streaming Media magazine as "The Long Sad Tale of Boxee. With the recent announcement that Boxee has been bought by Samsung and the termination of its service, there has been lots of consideration of what to do with the existing hardware that is out in people’s home. You didn’t succeed, but you made the streaming world more interesting. So that’s the end of Boxee, a minor Samsung investment that may not have reimbursed all of Boxee’s investors. “If they have a 1 in 10 chance of turning Boxee into something substantial, then it was a wise investment.” “In the scheme of Samsung, $30 million is not a lot of money,” Gaw said. Is this going to succeed, I asked? No TV maker has pulled it off yet. Rather than simply providing access to other services, it will create a name-brand service of its own. What Samsung wants to do, he believes, is create a rich media interface that gives people a reason to choose a Samsung set. “When people go and buy a connected TV, for the most part they are not buying the networking in the TV, they’re buying Netflix and Pandora,” Gaw said. Samsung wants to create a connected entertainment ecosystem for its TVs, something akin to iTunes on the Mac. It’s all about the media interface, Gaw said. I asked him what about Boxee was worth $30 million. While I couldn’t get Ronen on the phone, I did talk to Jonathan Gaw, a research manager at IDC who’s been following Boxee. Now, Boxee has taken one large, final pivot and cashed out, selling its assets to Samsung. In one of my favorite pieces on, Tim Siglin told how the device was being sold in Walmarts in rural markets, then instantly returned when people discovered the cloud DVR feature didn’t work in their area. The Boxee TV’s big problem was that cloud DVR service was only available in eight metropolitan areas. Unfortunately, unlimited cloud DVR support cost $15 per month (later reduced to $10). Boxee TV listed for $99 and looked cutting-edge by offering a cloud DVR. Looking a little desperate, the company cancelled the Box and announced an entirely new product, the Boxee TV, in October 2012 (alienating its fan base in the process). The people at Boxee offered improvements to the Box (Netflix support, a $49 accessory for tuning in over-the-air channels), but they weren’t enough to increase sales. By late 2010, game consoles, Blu-ray Players, and inexpensive Roku boxes gave most consumers all the streaming they really wanted (which was just access to Netflix). Unfortunately, Boxee was no longer ahead of the curve. The device sold for $199 and made using the Boxee media interface simple. Boxee showed a prototype of the Box at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2010, but it didn’t reach the market until November. It offered an attractive way to stream online videos to a television and to see what friends were viewing.īack in 2009, the company had two main problems: 1) Hulu wasn’t onboard and blocked its videos, and 2) the number of alpha geeks willing to go through the hassle of getting Boxee on their TVs wasn’t high.īoxee hoped to remedy that second problem by introducing the Boxee Box, a set-top box created with D-Link. This was long before Boxee hardware, when most users ran Boxee on Apple TVs or Mac minis.Īhead of its time when it debuted, Boxee found eager adopters in hipsters and hobbyists (“alpha geeks,” as co-founder and CEO Avner Ronen called them). One of the first pieces I ever wrote for Streaming Media, back in March 2009, explained this strange new thing called Boxee. If we see Boxee again, it will be buried so deep in a Samsung interface that we won’t recognize it. Boxee began as an idea in 2003 and ended as a sale to Samsung in 2013, rumored at $30 million. For example, Fallon advises, “It will look best to leave a bit of slack on the line to create a more fun, casual vibe. Solar is great for camping, or if there’s no access to electricity.” When considering solar you’ll also want to keep in mind the amount of sunshine your desired location gets throughout the day - if it’s a shady spot, solar lights aren’t a good fit, but if it gets all-day sun, you’re good to go. “And battery options are a great solution if you just want this temporarily for an outdoor dinner party.”Ī post shared by for solar, Fallon says they tend to be better for temporary or season-long use, as “they aren’t as reliable and may dim if it’s a cloudy day or a long event. “Plug-in are typically brighter, but make sure you’re close to a usable power source so that you don’t have an ugly extension cord hanging out,” says Hart. So that got me into a great grad school and job. I went to a shitty undergraduate school, but I did extremely well in a difficult subject (4.0 in mathematics). It isn't really too impressive to be honest. I think that'd really help land a great job in Beijing or Shanghai. What type of work are you doing? I hope to get up to Superior level to increase my chances of getting into the Wharton/Lauder program. like the 北京 '儿', or like how people from 杭州 and that area pronounce 'sh' like 's' and 'ch' like 'c'. I frequently have to remind people that I learned 标准普通话 and that I cannot understand their local dialect. (三) Accents as in dialects? Or do you mean tones? If you mean dialects, I'd say. I'd say you're at a huge advantage being there mostly because, IMO, conversational Chinese is much more difficult to master than the formal Chinese you hear on the news or read in the paper. You don't have to go into detail, but try to get the gist. Try to read the news in Chinese everyday. At the upper intermediate level, you should be able to handle almost all everyday situations (even if it feels clumsy). I took a 2 month immersion trip to Beijing while I was still in the Air Force and my OPI went from upper intermediate to advanced. (一和二) You are already doing the best thing possible. The best thing of the whole job though was simply the fact that I learned Chinese. I really miss that additional bit of current events information. Like state department economic reports or reports on Russian mafia involvement with European oil companies. The thing I liked most though: During downtime (which there was a shit ton of) I could just browse the classified web and read about really cool shit happening all over the world. It was tedious, but it was also a sort of satisfying positive feedback loop. Looking back though, I do miss sitting rack sometimes. It was cool as shit, but it served no purpose except to justify large budget increases. In the two years after it was built, the ONLY times I ever saw it being used was when we had some senator or general come visit. Several tens of millions of dollars this thing cost. When I was there they built this really cool 3-d holographic projection thingy that mapped and tracked asset movements. There was one really cool thing that our underground facility in Hawaii had. But it was also interesting to see how the intel machine works (and it is WAY less cool and WAY less advanced than depicted on tv and movies). It got quite tedious when just 'sitting rack,' which is what we call the watch floor jobs where we wear headphones and translate real-time voice communications. The job had high points and low points like any other. If I'd listed Spanish as first choice, they would've just said 'fuck you' and picked among those three for me. I scored a 147/150 on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery, so that pretty much meant I was either getting Chinese, Arabic, or Korean.
